EXERCISE 3.2

Using our account of the gas fridge as a model, please write your own brief account (500–1,000 words) of the decline of some other piece of ‘failed’ good-quality technology. Two other examples are the eight-track cartridge music system and Betamax videos, but please feel free to use other examples, if you know enough details. Your main aim in this piece should be to show the mutual conditioning of the social, the economic, the scientific and the technological. You might also like to show how something becomes an obligatory point of passage (for example, video developments now have to go through VHS; Betamax is closed off to the point where new video cassette developments have to be ‘backwards-compatible’ with old-fashioned VHS cassettes). Please try to frame your account so it is ‘problembased’.
